  • In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until just al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
  • Incorporate the minced garlic and the ground meat into the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned and fully cooked, roughly 5-7 minutes. Use a spatula to break the meat into smaller pieces. Season the mixture with the Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to enhance the flavors.
  • Pour in the marinara sauce and stir well. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Then, remove the skillet from the heat.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, a pinch of salt, and half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained ziti pasta with the meat sauce and the ricotta mixture. Stir everything together thoroughly until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce and cheese mixture.
  • Transfer the combined mixture into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • Generously sprinkle the top with the shredded mozzarella and the remaining Parmesan cheese. Ensure the cheese is evenly distributed for a deliciously cheesy topping.
  • Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake it in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. After this, carefully remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and has turned a lovely golden brown.
  • Once it’s baked to perfection, take the dish out of the oven and allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. This helps set the layers and makes for easier slicing.
  • Just before serving, garnish the baked ziti with fresh basil leaves, adding a touch of freshness and color.
